About today’s blog,I take the opportunity to talk about the president of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Basically, there are a lot to talk about him and most importantly the good work he is doing for mother Ghana. These are few things to look out for on today’s blog:

  1. A profile of the president.
  2. Some accomplishment since he was given the mandate.
  3. Measure put in place by government to protect the lives of the people of Ghana in this hard period; covid 19.

Profile of the president

President Akufo-Addo was born and raised in Accra, the son of Edward and Adeline Akufo-Addo. He received his primary education in Accra, first attending the government boys school, Adabraka and then Rowe Road School (now Kinbu), both in Accra Central. He went on to the United Kingdom for his secondary education, studying at Lancing College (1957-1961). He came home to Ghana and in 1964 began attending University of Ghana, graduating with a bachelor degree in economics in 1967. He returned to U.K to study law and was called to the bar in England (middle Temple) in 1971 and in Ghana in 1975. He worked in France at the Paris office of the U.S. law firm Coudert Brothers from (1971-1975). He came to Ghana and from 1975 to 1979 worked in the chambers of U.V Campbell. In 1979, he cofounded the law firm Akufo-Addo, Prempeh and Co.

In 1992, he joined the nascent New Patriotic Party (NPP) and served as a member of parliament for three terms (1996-2008). He served as attorney general and minister of justice from 2001 until 2003. That year he became foreign minister, a position he held until 2007, when he resigned in order to stand in the contest to be NPP flag bearer in 2008.

In 2008 election, Akufo-Addo was narrowly defeated by late Prof. Evan Atta Mills in the second round of the election. In Dec 7,2012, John Mahama was announced the winner with 50.7% with Akufo-Addo coming close with 47.7%. Finally, in 2016, he contested for the third time and won with an unprecedented figure in the history of Ghana election. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was inaugurated on January 7,2017.

Some accomplishment are as follows;

  1. One district one factory.
  2. Free Senior High School.
  3. Appointed special prosecutor to tackle long-standing issue of corruption.
  4. Roll out National Digital Property Addressing System.
  5. Restoring nursing trainee allowance.
  6. Restoring teacher trainee allowance.
  7. Implement a Nation Builders Corps Program (NABCO).
  8. Reviving Ghana Railways.
  9. Reduce inflation to a single digits.
  10. Revive the NHIS.
  11. Commissioned 307 ambulances
  12. Created six new region.

Measures of mitigating for Ghanaians to combat covid-19

  1. Government to pay water bills for all Ghanaian for the next three months. April- June
  2. Government has absorb the electricity bills of consumer for the next three months
  3. Some government officials donate their three months salaries to covid-19 battle.
  4. Tax reliefs for the month of April to June, an insurance package for each health personnel and allied professional at the forefront of this pandemic and additional allowance of 50% of their basic salary per month for the month of March to June.
